DANNY AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

“An explosive, deeply affecting study of alienation and the redemptive power of love…a wrenching love story that swept through the downtown Circle in the Square last night like a tidal wave."

DANNY AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA
by JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY
Directed by MARK LEWIS
October 18 - November 4, 2017
The setting is a rundown bar in the Bronx, where two of society's rejects, Danny and Roberta, strike up a halting conversation over beer. He's a brooding, self-loathing young man who turns to violence over reason; she's a divorced, guilt-ridden woman whose troubled teenage son is now with her parents. Danny, nicknamed "the animal" by fellow truckers, seems incapable of tenderness, while Roberta is wary of men. Yet as their guard begins to lower and they choose to spend the night together, the possibility of a genuine relationship emerges - the first for both. There are no easy answers, but thanks to the playwright's compassion, both characters find a painful but real path toward exorcism, forgiveness, and the hope of a life beyond bitterness and loneliness.

John Patrick Shanley is from the Bronx. He was thrown out of St. Helena’s kindergarten. He was banned from St. Anthony’s hot lunch program for life. He was expelled from Cardinal Spellman High School. He was placed on academic probation by New York University and instructed to appear before a tribunal if he wished to return. When asked why he had been treated in this way by all these institutions, he burst into tears and said he had no idea. Then he went into the United States Marine Corps. He did fine. He’s still doing okay.
